ベルギーの最高峰、孤高のドラマー。
長らくジャズの演奏家であり、アフリカやインドなど世界中に様々な音楽と交流し唯一無二のスタイルを築く。
完全即興も歌モノもすべてが恐ろしく覚醒した集中力で演奏され見る者を圧倒。
近年リリースされたソロアルバム「a snare is bell」は教会の壁から跳ね返る無数の反射音を録音した完全アコースティクでスネアドラムと彼の肉体だけを使用した
ノーミックスの45回転アナログ片面レコード限定500枚で、ソニックユースのレーベルから配給されている。
ベルギー国内での活動のほかにマークりボーらNY勢との共演やベルギー最有力ロックバンドdeusのメンバーとの共演、
ヴィジュアルアートとのコラボレーションや他のミュージシャンのプロデュースなど、活動は無制限。
端正なプレイヤーが多い欧州勢の中で、恐ろしく強靭でかつ柔軟な彼のプレイはどこか東洋を思わせるところがある。
現代的な演奏とシャーマニックなまでの集中力は見聞きするものの耳目を確実に釘付けにする。

作曲家で映像作家にして卓越したサックス奏者。NY生まれ。
ジョンパーセルらとジャズを学びマークジョンソンやヴィクタールイス、セシルテイラーら多数と共演。
ジョーヘンダーソンやスタン・ゲッツらとスタンフォード大学でジャズワークショプを行う。
ベルギーにてサックスソロパフォーマンスを開始。
インド古典音楽の研究を通じて多くの人脈や事柄を得る。

アメリカに戻り、映像作品にかかわる。自社でインディペンデントのドキュメンタリー映画のプロデュースし、
ブライアン・デ・パルマら多数の映像作家たちとコラボレーションを行う。
その他にもアクリル絵画と写真を使った新しい映像の方法の開発。

アルト・ソプラノ・ソプラニーノ・サックスの可能性を追求し、デビッド・サンボーンらと新しいマウスピースの創造にも関与。
Michael Hubbard社とのコラボレーションで、暖かく他にない音色を持つ、サックスとドゥドゥク（アルメニアのリード楽器）との折衷楽器sadukを発明開発。
ジャズともクラシックとも民族音楽とも言い難い音楽性は人柄を反映して優しく深い。

Works as a leader or solo: "a Snare is a Bell" : solo snaredrumpiece based on the harmonic resonances created by pressrolling the shit out of it. A piece inspired by my blood/genetic code and psychodramatic youth. Inspired by my African shaman brothers. a collaboration with Phillip Metten creating a scenography/installation! "a Snare is a Bell-Orchestra": a project/band in progress with oa Jean-Yves Evrard, Hilary Jeffery, Peter Jacquemyn, Jozef Dumoulin, Jorgen Cassier, Claron Mc Fadden,... "RRAUW" : a multidisciplinary search into the many qualities of silence...with oa Barre Phillips, Jean-Yves Evrard, Erik Vermeulen, Ned Rothenberg, Alex Waterman, Laure Delamotte-Legrand, Jorgen Cassier, Alexis Destoop, Raymond Mallentier... Present & Future collaborations, Love Affairs, Bands, Dreams and Hopes (a very brief and uncomplete list): "18 Suns of June": a duet with Kari-Anne Bjerkestrand (NO) combining dance and music. "Lidlboy": a Jozef Dumoulin band. "Jozef Dumoulin Trio" with Sebastien Boisseau on bass. "coca-cola met god" :Tim Van Hamel & Eric Thielemans performing and playing punkjazz and electrotrash. "Celine" : improv trio with Alex Waterman (cello) and Jean-Yves Evrard(guitar). Past stuff: Ben Sluys Quartet: somewhere in the past. Laurent Dehors: Tous Dehors, Trio, etc... Maak's Spirit: a Belgian/French contemporary jazzband.... "Veldwerk": a free improv jazz/electro etcetera band with Wimbo and himself +guests. Works as artisitc producer: "Romeo & Laila" cd of Tunesian singer Ghalia released in 2006. "Stroke" by released in 2008.

Alexander Berne is a composer, visual artist, and virtuoso musician of the highest order. Born in New York, he cut his teeth on the jazz scene―after studies with Tim Ries, John Purcell, and Eddie Daniels he began working with such luminaries as Billy Hart, Victor Lewis, Mark Johnson, Ethan Iverson, Cecil Taylor, Ben Monder, John Hollenbeck, Kevin Hays, Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier, Albert “Tootie” Heath and many others. During that period he taught at the prestigious Stanford University Jazz Workshop alongside Joe Henderson and Stan Getz.

Berne then moved to Belgium where he devoted himself to solo saxophone performances, to highest acclaim at Logos and elsewhere for using technical innovation to sonically transport listeners.

Returning to America, Berne became involved in film production, working on and producing independent documentaries and features for his company, Harbor Productions, including work with Nicholas Hytner and Jim Broadbent at the Royal National in London, Brian DePalma, Edward Pressman, Paul Williams, and Armondo Linus Acosta. This was accompanied by a phase of creative activity in the visual arts, where he invented a new form of painting involving the abstracts play of photo emulsion and acrylics on paper.

Berne is an innovator in the woodwind realm, specializing in alto, soprano, and sopranino saxophones. He was involved in the creation and production of a new kind of mouthpiece, in collaboration with David Sanborn. In addition, he created his own instrument, collaborating with famous instrument maker Called the ‘saduk’, it is a cross between a saxophone and the Armenian duduk, and has a warm, woody tone unlike any ever heard before.

A musician with serious interest in the music of other cultures, Berne dedicated years of his life to the study of the tabla and Indian Classical Music, studying with Misha Masud and others. During this phase he developed relationships with Debashish Bhattacharya, Krishna Bhatt and other world instrumentalists such as Lu Fang and Glenn Velez.
